Electrical Product Safety

Helping Our Community Stay Safe

At Yorkshire Wellbeing Skills Group, we’re passionate about helping local people make safe, informed choices when buying and using electrical goods – especially second-hand items.

We know that in our community, many families and older residents buy second-hand electrical appliances from local markets, online platforms, and car boot sales. While this can be a great way to save money, it can also carry risks if the product hasn’t been properly checked for safety.

Unsafe electrical products can cause fires, electric shocks, or serious injury.
That’s why we’re working hard to raise awareness about the dangers and show people how to spot potential hazards before they bring an item into their home.

How We Help

  • Free safety workshops – friendly, relaxed sessions where you can learn how to check if an electrical item is safe before buying or using it.
  • Home safety visits – for vulnerable or elderly residents, we offer free home checks and PAT testing for small appliances.
  • Clear advice in community languages – our leaflets, posters, and guidance are available in Urdu, and English, so everyone can access the information they need.
  • Practical demonstrations at our Coffee Mornings & Drop In sessions – see real examples of safe vs. unsafe products and learn how to tell the difference.

What You’ll Learn

  • How to check plugs, cables, and fuses for damage.
  • Why it’s important to register your electrical products.
  • Where to find reliable sellers and avoid high-risk buying sources.
  • How to check if a product has been recalled.

Why this matters

Electrical safety is not just about protecting your own home – it’s about keeping your family, neighbours, and community safe. A small check before buying could prevent a serious accident later.

By working together, sharing knowledge, and taking a few simple steps, we can all reduce the risks from unsafe second-hand electrical goods.
